Choosing Accounting Software in 2026
Why It Matters
Your accounting software is the financial nervous system of your business. The right choice saves hours each week, reduces errors, and keeps you compliant. The wrong choice creates friction, hidden costs, and compliance risk.
Key Features to Look For
At a minimum, your accounting software should handle invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, GST calculations, BAS preparation, and financial reporting. In 2026, you should also expect bank feed integration, Single Touch Payroll (STP Phase 2), and multi-currency support if you deal internationally.
Cloud vs Desktop
Cloud accounting has become the standard for Australian businesses. It offers real-time collaboration with your accountant, automatic backups, bank feed connectivity, and access from any device. Desktop software still exists but is increasingly limited in integrations and compliance features.
Australian Compliance
Make sure the software is designed for Australian tax requirements. This means proper GST handling (including GST-free and input-taxed categories), BAS generation, STP reporting, and superannuation calculations. Software designed for other markets often treats these as afterthoughts.
Data Integrity
Ask how the software protects your records from being changed, and whether it is clear about what each check covers. Signing can show that a record was changed after the fact, but it can’t show that all your records are there or that the accounting is right.
Pricing Transparency
Watch for software that advertises a low starting price but charges extra for essential features like payroll, multi-currency, or additional users. Calculate the total cost for your actual needs before committing.
Migration Path
Before committing, check how easy it is to import your existing data and -- equally important -- how easy it is to export if you ever need to switch. Avoid lock-in.
